The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office currently has two detectives assigned to the investigation into the circumstances of the fire that destroyed a local business on Saturday, May 20, 2017.

The business known as “Bob’s Place” located at 1490 Moorefield Memorial Hwy has been declared to be a total loss due to damage from the fire.

The Sheriff’s Office has interviewed several individuals and tracked down numerous leads but has yet to develop enough information to positively identify a suspect. Information that has been disseminated from various sources over social media has stated that an individual has been arrested by the Sheriff’s Office as a result of the investigation.

Sheriff Rick Clark stated…

“We have not filed charges against any individual regarding the fire at Bob’s Place. We ask that members of the community refrain from making unsubstantiated statements and I certainly would advise them to not publicly identify a particular person by name as being the person responsible for the fire unless that information has been released by my office.

Publicly posting these types of statements can potentially jeopardize our investigation and I am committed to bringing the person or persons responsible for this incident to justice once we are able to confirm our suspicions that this was an intentional act targeted against Bob’s Place.

For the sake of Ms. Johnson (Bob’s widow), help us and don’t work against us. If you have information that you think we should be aware of then please contact my detectives or if you feel more comfortable remaining anonymous then please contact CrimeStoppers.”

The Sheriff’s Office is working closely with prosecutors from the 13th Circuit Solicitor’s Office throughout the investigation as the facts and supporting evidence is collected.

Anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to please contact the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office at (864) 898-5500 or Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIMESC.

05-23-17

The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office is confirming that a deputy was involved in a traffic collision at the intersection of Hwy 93 and South Pendleton St. at approximately 10:00pm on Monday, May 22, 2017.

The on-duty deputy was the only occupant in the marked patrol unit at the time of the collision which involved a 2014 Toyota Tundra truck occupied by two civilians. The deputy and the two civilians were treated and released for minor injuries following the accident.

Preliminary findings indicate that the deputy entered the intersection with his blue lights activated after he observed another vehicle disregard the red light. In the deputy’s effort to pass through the intersection and stop the suspected violator, the patrol unit was struck on the driver’s side by an oncoming vehicle causing extensive damage to both vehicles.

The Sheriff’s Office wants to emphasize that the deputy was not in an active pursuit.

As per state law, the SC Highway Patrol was requested to investigate the accident. The deputy was cited for Failure to Yield Right of Way.

Sheriff Rick Clark stated…

“We are extremely thankful and feel blessed that the three parties involved in this accident did not sustain any life-threatening injuries. Unfortunately, the unknown driver in the vehicle that precipitated the incident did not stop and was not able to be identified.

We serve with the vision to protect life and property and we are our own worst critics when our actions fall short of achieving that goal”.
