Pickens County Sheriff’s Office Requests SLED to Investigate Officer Involved Shooting

The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a female homeowner at 447 Latham Rd in Easley at approximately 3:20pm this afternoon stating that there was a suspicious person that had forced entry into her home through a door at the rear of the residence.

A deputy arrived on the scene in approximately 12 minutes after being dispatched and upon discovering evidence of the forced entry the deputy entered the home out of concern for the female homeowner that was home alone and hiding in a room inside the residence.

The deputy encountered a male later identified as Franklin Reed Styles (18yoa) inside the residence and preliminary information is that the deputy fired multiple rounds from his service weapon with at least one round striking the suspect.  The deputy and the homeowner were not injured during the incident.

Sheriff Rick Clark requested assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the investigation into the circumstances of the shooting has been turned over to their agency for review into the use of force.

Mr. Styles is currently being treated at a local hospital and pending his release he will be charged with Burglary. The deputy has been placed on Administrative Leave pursuant to policy for officer involved shootings pending the outcome of an internal review.
